BOBBY FISCHER'S 1973 VISIT TO THE PHILIPPINES

Watch the video/picture clip of the Great Bobby Fischer when he visited the Philippines in 1973. The then World Chess Champion was treated like a royalty by no less than Philippine President Ferdinand E. Marcos and his First Lady Imelda Marcos.

THEME SONG FOR THE CHESS PATZER

( Caissa's Father vs. Chris Yap of One Network Bank in action during the 1st Cong. Ungab Cup Toril Team Championships.

As usual, I blundered my way..)

The lyrics to this song was provided by Sugardom, the acknowledged Supremo of the Barangay Wesley So page at Chessgames.com. Every time you play a friendly chess game and losing, just sing this song to mitigate your misery.

( To the tune of My Way, by Frank Sinatra, Lyrics by Sugardom of BWS )

I Blundered (My Way)

And now, the end is near;
And so I face my last opponent
My friend, Ill say it clear,
Ill lose my game, of which Im certain.

Ive played a game thats full.
Ive blundered each and evry give-away;
And more, much more than this,
I blundered my way.

Regrets, Ive had so much;
But then again, too much to mention.
I did what I had to do
And blundered through without exemption.

I planned each charted course;
Each careful move along the hallway,
But more, much more than this,
I blundered my way.

Yes, there were times, Im sure you knew
When I bit off more than I could chew.
But through it all, when there was doubt,
I ate a rook and spit it out.
I faced them all and I stood tall;
And blundered my way.

Ive played, Ive laughed and cried.
Ive had my fill; my share of losing.
And now, as tears subside,
I find it all so amusing.

To think I did all that;
And may I say - not in a shy way,
No, oh no not me,
I blundered my way.

For what is a man, what has he got?
If not himself, then he has naught.
To play the moves he truly feels;
And not the moves of one who kneels.
The record shows I took the blows -
And blundered my way!

Annotations by Caissa's Father

1. d4

Our team played the white side and I voted for 1.e4 but was out-voted.

2..c5 3.d4 d6 3.c4 Nf6 4. Qc2!?

A rarely played move. 4.Nc3 is quite common.

4...g6 5. Nc3 Bg7

The game has now evolved into a kind of a Benoni defense set-up.

6. g3 O-O 7. Bg2 Nbd7 8. Nf3 a6 9. a4 Nb6?!

A loss of tempo. Black was hoping that White would play 10.b3 Bf5! with advantage as there is a threat to white's a1 rook.
10. Nd2! e6

Black should have played this move earlier.

11. a5! Nbd7 12. O-O e5 13.e4 Nh5

The game is now transformed into a King's Indian type set-up with white already ahead of his queenside play.

14.Nf3

White is planning to exploit the hole in e6 if Black follows his planned f5 break. Now 14...f5 15.Ng5 Ndf6 16.Ne6 Bxe6 17.dxe6 Qe7 (17...fxe4 Nxe4 should favor White. Black will not be able to get rid of the e6 pawn.) 18.exf5 gxf5 19.Qxf5 with advantage for White.

14...b6

Having been deterred on his f5-break Black seeks counterplay on the other wing. But 14...h6 preparing f5 is worthy of attention. Then 15.g4 Nf4 16.Bxf4 exf4 17.Ne2 with a complicated position.

15. Qa4! Rb8 16. Bg5 f6 17. Bd2 f5?

This is a hara-kiri move..

18. Ng5! (of course!)18...Qe7 19. Ne6

Here comes the Tarrash knight.

19...b5?

Black tries to create counter-play in the queenside. Better is 19...Ndf6 intending to capture the offending Knight on e6 with a decent, complex play.

20. cxb5 axb5 21. Nxb5 Ba6 22. Nbc7

White can afford to give up one of his Rooks for Black's light-squared Bishop. His passed a-pawns and rampaging Knights are more than enough compensation.

22...Bxf1 23. Bxf1 Rfc8 24. a6!

Black is now helpless against the queenning a pawn.

24...Nb6 25. Qc6 Na8 26. a7 Rb6 27. Qxa8

It is such an exhilerating feeling to win a game with a queen sacrifice. Thanks to his dominating Knights, White's position really plays itself out.

27...Rxa8 28. Nxa8 Rb7 29. Nac7 Rxa7 30. Rxa7 1-0

Sweet revenge!! he.he.

GAME 1- CONSULTATION GAME " HOW NOT TO PLAY A ROOK ENDING "

GAME 1 - CONSULTATION GAME

SICILIAN PELIKAN

With brief annotations by Caissa's Father

1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. Nc3 e5

The Sicilian Defense Pelikan variation. I voted for the Sicilian dragon set-up but was out-voted. I am more comfortable playing the white side of this line.

6. Ndb5 d6 7. Nd5 Nxd5 8. Qxd5?!

This capture is bad as it losses a tempo. The game was played among GM Wesley So's fans all over the world and the first move voted twice becomes the official move.It shows the disparity among the chess strenght of the players as sometimes strong moves are discarded in favor of an inferior move voted first.

Be6 9. Qd3 a6 10. Nc3 Nb4!?

I voted for this move. This move is a good one if followed-up properly.

11. Qd1 d5!

It is a basic principle in the Sicilan Defense that Black should strive for the freeing move ..d5. If Black can do it as in the game without compromising his position, then he achieves equality.

12. a3 d4! 13. Ne2

If 13.axb4 Bxb4 with agood game for black.

13...d3?!

Premature. Nc6 is much better.

14. axb4 dxe2 15. Bxe2 Bxb4+ 16. c3 Qxd1+ 17. Bxd1 Bc5

18. Ba4+ Ke7 19. b4 Ba7 20. Ba3 b5 21. Bd1 Bc4 22. Be2 Rhc8

23. Rc1 Rc7?!

Up to this point black holds the advantage. The move is just a loss of tempo. Clearly better is 23...Bxe2 24. Kxe2 Rc4 25. f3 Rac8 maintaining the pressure along the c file.

24. Bb2 Rac8 25. g4 g6?! 26. g5! Bb6 27. h4 Rf8

From there on Black losses the thread of the game which could have been an easy draw being a rook ending.

28. Ra1 Ra8 29. h5 a5 30. hxg6 hxg6 31. bxa5 Bc5 32. Bxc4 bxc4

CONSULTATION GAMES BETWEEN MEMBERS OF BARANGAY WESLEY SO AT CHESSGAMES.COM

This past week the Wesley So page at Chessgames.com was agog with chess activity and excitement with the staging of the consultation games among the Barangay Wesley So members all over the world. The staging of the games was the idea of the Barangay's Supremo Sugardom in order to fastrack the kibitzing in the said page at the time when GM So had no tournament games with the ultimate goal of surpassing the GM Magnus Carlsen page as the most number of page kibitz. So far two exciting games had already been played in a span of five days and the score is tied between the A-K team and the L-Z team.

THE MECHANICS

Sec 1 - How to vote:
1.1 Just type for example (24th move): 24.Bd6 whether white or 24 ... Kg1 if black.

1.2 Be free to kibitz or make suggestions to each other. But if you want to vote just follow the rules above.

1. 3 Two votes of the same move are enough to make it official. The moderator will then update the chess diagram and indicate the time.

1.4 TP (or AM, Agreed Move). If there is no majority vote, team members are given a chance to reach compromise before the 10 minute rule. A player may change his vote for this purpose.

Sec 2 - Time Controls
2.1 There is no limit on the speed, but time limit is set at 10 minutes if players from both sides are around.

2.2 If there is no majority vote in 10 minutes, the first vote is accepted as the official move. This is called the 10-minute rule.

Sec. 3 - Use of Computers
3.1 It is strictly prohibited to use computers programs such as Fritz and Rybka. We expect you to be honest and trustworthy members of BW. The posting of computer analysis is also prohibited. All players are asked to recite the Chess Player's oath (oath of Kabarangay Wesley on Non-Use of Computers).

Sec. 4 - Official Language: English

Sec. 5 - Ignore of the Trolls
5.1 Everyone is requested to put on ignore list any person who is trying to disrupt the game.

Sec. 6 - Continuance of the game.
6.1 The game is designed to be played continuously over 24 hours. 2 players, 1 each from opposing side, with 1 acting as the moderator constitute a quorum and can legally continue the game. 6.2 Reserved Game - opposing teams can move to “reserve” the game for a latter date. The resumption time/date must be agreed on by both parties.

THE OATH
